The Body Knows: Expanding Trauma Work Beyond the Mind

For the Swedish Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies:

This presentation invites clinicians to broaden their understanding of
trauma beyond single-event PTSD, while remaining grounded in thoughtful,
evidence-informed clinical practice. Through an integrative, body-based
lens, Mariah Rooney will explore complex trauma, including attachment
trauma and intergenerational trauma, and the many ways these experiences
may be expressed in the therapy room. She will also address
dissociation: how it may appear in the therapy room, how clinicians can
understand it as part of the body’s protective response to overwhelming
experience, and how they can respond in ways that support safety,
regulation, and connection.

For CBT therapists familiar with working with thoughts, emotions, and
behaviors, this lecture offers a way to expand the clinical lens to
include the body: its signals, protective responses, and relational
cues. Participants will leave with a richer theoretical framework and
concrete, accessible tools for bringing body awareness into trauma work
in ways that are gradual, safe, and clinically useful — along with a
sense of what becomes possible when we center the body in our
therapeutic work.
